Michael Bates interest in photography began at an early age when, in the 6th grade he got his first
camera for Christmas. After taking photography in high school and seeing his first print come to life
in the darkroom he knew this was his artistic calling. He shot his first wedding while still in high
school and still does weddings and portraiture.
Michael spent 12 years in the United States Air Force as a KC-135 crew chief but still kept polishing
his skills as a photographer.
Michael's skills have not gone unnoticed, when the airline he works for started annual photography
contests, Michael won first place 3 years in a row. In 2004 after his first show he earned enough
money to open his own gallery and studio in Sky Forest, California.
Michael was recently honored with a "Best of Show" blue ribbon at the Lake Arrowhead Art and Wine
Festival for the photography category.
Michael enjoys all aspects of photography and digital art, weddings and portraiture, but really enjoys
shooting scenics and wildlife images. One of his favorite subjects are the Bald Eagles that winter near
his home in the San Bernardino mountains.
Michael has done extensive field work in Alaska, Hawaii, Arizona, Washington state, Wyoming & Kentucky.
